Cathay Pacific is embracing the “new business class” trend with an innovative approach for its upcoming Airbus A330neo, set to begin flying in 2028 with 30 jets arriving by 2031. The airline is currently exploring options for the A330neo business class, which may or may not resemble the flatbed seats found on its upgraded A330 jets. Vivian Lo, Cathay Pacific’s General Manager of Customer Experience and Design, emphasizes that the focus will be on designing a unique passenger experience rather than solely relying on a specific seat supplier.
Cathay’s flexible strategy involves assessing how any chosen seat can provide a consistent experience across its A330neo business class. The airline is not rushing to finalize cabin specifications, as deliveries won’t begin until 2028. However, it aims to establish supplier contracts soon to ensure seamless integration of all components.
The A330neo, known for its fuel-efficient engines and lower emissions, will feature a more spacious cabin environment with larger overhead bins, enhanced lighting, and the option for electronically-dimmable windows. Primarily, these aircraft are intended to replace older A330s and some Boeing 777s on high-capacity regional routes but may also serve longer destinations.
Cathay Pacific holds an initial order for 30 A330neo jets, with additional purchase rights for another 30. The new business class will complement existing offerings, including the A321neo and 777 Aria Suites.
