Getting around on the BTS in Bangkok

The BTS Skytrain is Thailand’s first electric mass transit railway system, developed and managed by the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC). Officially inaugurated on December 5, 1999, the BTS Skytrain operates on two lines and serves a total of 23 stations.

The Sukhumvit Line, which honors His Majesty the King’s 6th Cycle Birthday, runs 17 kilometers from Mo Chit Station to On Nut Station. The Silom Line, also commemorating the King’s birthday, spans 6.5 kilometers from National Stadium Station to Saphan Taksin Station.

The BTS SkyTrain serves as a high-capacity mass transit system with international standards, commonly utilized in major cities worldwide. Each train can accommodate up to 1,000 passengers per trip, which reduces the equivalent requirement to transport the same number of commuters by road to just 250 cars. Powered by electric motors and utilizing a third-rail system for electricity, the SkyTrain operates on elevated tracks with separate tracks and platforms for inbound and outbound trains. This innovative system has transformed urban commuting and enhanced the standard of mass transit services.

Beyond servicing business areas, shopping districts, and residential neighborhoods in central Bangkok, there are plans for an extension project aimed at connecting a wider community of potential passengers across three provinces: Bangkok, Samut Prakan, and Pathum Thani.
