Singapore Airlines may have to postpone the launch of its next-generation first and business class suites once again due to Boeing’s recent announcement confirming that the long-delayed 777X jetliner will not be ready until 2026.
The airline has ordered 31 of Boeing’s 777-9 model, which was expected to serve as the foundation for a major upgrade in premium cabins, as described by CEO Goh Choon Phong to Executive Traveller. He emphasized the anticipation of a “quantum leap” in first-class offerings, aiming to set new industry standards with the upcoming launch.
The Boeing 777X family was initially scheduled to debut in 2019; however, numerous challenges—including technical and engine problems, along with pandemic-related supply chain issues—have caused repeated setbacks.
In May 2024, Singapore Airlines’ CEO Goh expressed hope that the airline would take delivery of its first SQ 777-9 by late 2025, which was already a significant delay from the original expected timeline of FY21/22.
Now, with Boeing stating that the first delivery of the 777X will not occur before 2026, it raises the possibility that Singapore Airlines may not receive its first 777-9 unit until 2027, especially with Emirates, Lufthansa, and Qatar Airways reportedly ahead in the delivery queue.
