China’s first Legoland Resort officially opened in Shanghai on July 5, 2025. Situated in Fengjing Town, Jinshan District, this highly anticipated theme park is China’s inaugural Legoland Resort and also the largest of its kind at the time of opening, covering an area of 318,000 square meters.
This new resort and hotel destination invites visitors to explore eight distinct “lands,” featuring over 75 interactive rides, shows, and attractions. Guests can marvel at thousands of Lego models constructed from more than 85 million Lego bricks. Whether seeking adrenaline rushes or hands-on play, every aspect of the Shanghai Legoland Resort promises memorable experiences for visitors of all ages.
During its grand opening, Legoland Shanghai introduced exclusive attractions designed to offer top-tier entertainment. Attendees can enjoy a spectacular live theatre show featuring the world premiere of the Lego Monkie Kid performance. Additionally, the resort features a unique water-town style boat tour, allowing guests to cruise through scaled Lego recreations of Water Town in China and modern Shanghai cityscapes—entirely built with Lego bricks. The resort also launched the Legoland Creative World, a new zone focused on fostering creativity, alongside Brick Street and Bricktopia—destinations bursting with imaginative Lego displays, impressive models, and daily performances.
For thrill-seekers, the Lego Ninjago land offers three major rides. Younger visitors new to theme parks can begin their adventure in Lego City, tailored for beginner explorers.
Strategic Investment at the Right Moment
The construction of the Legoland Shanghai Resort, costing approximately US$550 million, was made possible through collaboration among Shanghai Jinshan Urban Investment Group, UK-based Merlin Entertainments Group, Denmark’s KIRKBI Invest A/S (parent company of the Lego Group), and Chinese media and entertainment conglomerate CMC Inc. With this opening, there are now ten Lego resorts operating worldwide.
This significant investment comes amid cautious attitudes from many foreign companies towards the Chinese market. However, domestic tourism prospects remain promising. Despite the slower growth of China’s economy in recent years, the country’s domestic travel market expanded by 18.6% in the first quarter year-over-year, according to official data.
Chinese travelers are increasingly encouraged to explore within the country. Government initiatives include subsidies to make domestic travel more affordable, and provincial authorities are actively promoting local attractions via social media.
Nevertheless, the new Legoland Shanghai Resort faces stiff competition as Shanghai continues to evolve into a major hub for theme parks. The city recently opened a “Spider-Man” attraction at Shanghai Disneyland in May. Warner Bros. is eyeing a Harry Potter themed park in Shanghai by 2027, and American toy giant Hasbro announced that its Peppa Pig park in China’s financial hub is now in the creative design phase.
