Thai Airways CEO Maintains Focus on Streamlining Aircraft Fleet

The CEO of Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) stated that the airline is making steady progress in consolidating its aircraft fleet. He explained that before the pandemic, the airline operated eight different aircraft types. This number has now been reduced to six, with plans to further cut it down to four.

Currently, Thai Airways operates twenty A320-200s, five A330-300s, twenty-three A350-900s, five B777-200ERs, seventeen B777-300ERs, six B787-8s, and three B787-9s, totaling 79 aircraft. The airline retired its A380-800s and remaining B747-400s shortly after the outbreak of the pandemic.

The CEO mentioned that the airline aims to decrease its aircraft types to five by 2029, following the retirement of the B777-200ERs, and to four by 2033, after retiring the A330-300s. By that time, the fleet is projected to grow to around 150 aircraft, comprising fifteen B777-300ERs, seventeen A350-900s, sixty-six B787s (both the B787-8 and -9 variants), and fifty-two Airbus narrowbodies.

Thai Airways continues to be active in the leasing market and has on order thirty-two A321-200Ns, six B787-10s, and forty-two B787-9s. The A321neo jets are expected to arrive between November 2025 and August 2028. The airline also plans to receive four B787-9s in the first half of 2026, with deliveries of B787-10s scheduled to begin in mid-2027. Additionally, fourteen B777-300ERs are set to be delivered over a 12-month period starting from May 2027. Adjusting for retirements, the airline anticipates increasing its fleet by approximately 80 aircraft by the end of 2028.
