Emirates Plans to Develop New First Class Suites and Possibly Doored Business Class for A380

Emirates is preparing to upgrade its Airbus A380 fleet with new first class suites, and may also introduce doored business class cabins, in a bid to maintain its competitiveness through the end of the decade. While the airline continues to enhance its aircraft, some of its signature features—such as private shower suites and the renowned upper-deck cocktail bar shared with business class—remain unique highlights.

Having recently completed a $2 billion refurbishment program, which included a refresh of first and business class cabins, an upgraded bar, and the addition of a 56-seat premium economy section, Emirates emphasizes the importance of ongoing product innovation.

“Our approach is similar to that of a hotel—constant updates are necessary,” stated airline President Sir Tim Clark during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) conference in Delhi. “We have new designs for first class currently in development, which are on the drawing board.”

The airline’s existing flagship first class suite on the Boeing 777, renowned for its floor-to-ceiling privacy walls and advanced “zero-gravity” recliner, exemplifies Emirates’ commitment to luxury and high-tech amenities. Clark also plans to expand the installation of these high-privacy suites across the Boeing 777 fleet, further reinforcing the airline’s premium offerings.

Design proposals for Emirates’ upgraded A380 cabins may include replacing the existing 1-2-1 suite configuration at the front of the upper deck with three larger suites, or transforming the current pair of middle-cabin suites into an oversized, couple-friendly suite, similar to Lufthansa’s Allegris first class concept.

Although Sir Tim Clark’s comments primarily referenced the A380 first class cabin, similar enhancements could see the doored business class suites from the Emirates 777X introduced on the superjumbo, further elevating the airline’s onboard luxury experience.

Emirates has recently completed a comprehensive refurbishment of its Airbus A380 fleet, delivering an enhanced passenger experience marked by aesthetic and comfort upgrades. The airline assures that travelers will immediately notice the improvements upon boarding, as the spacious A380 cabins are now designed to appear more luxurious and inviting.

The first and business class cabins feature a lighter color palette, shifting away from the original gold and faux-walnut burl finishes toward softer tones and cream-colored leather upholstery. These updates complement design elements such as the refreshed second-generation cocktail bar and the latest first class suites introduced on the Boeing 777.

In the first class section, the 14 suites have been refined with marginally taller walls to increase privacy, along with wider seats to improve comfort. Passengers can enjoy unlimited servings of Persian caviar paired with vintage Dom Perignon champagne. Both of the first class shower suites received a redesign, now featuring hand-stencilled panels depicting the UAE’s native ghaf tree—an ornamental motif also incorporated elsewhere throughout the cabin.

These enhancements reflect Emirates’ ongoing commitment to maintaining a leading position in the ultra-luxury segment, offering passengers a combination of sophisticated design and elevated comfort on its flagship aircraft.

The business class seats along the upper deck were fully dismantled and undergo a comprehensive overhaul at Emirates Engineering’s facilities. The redesigned seats now feature reupholstered quilted cream leather and lighter wood veneer accents, aligning with the aesthetic introduced in the first class cabins.

At the aft of the upper deck, the original cocktail bars were removed and replaced with a contemporary centerpiece, complemented by an L-shaped sofa and a four-seat ‘club-style’ table, creating a more inviting social space.

Additionally, enhanced soundproofing has been implemented to reduce noise disturbances for passengers seated in the rear rows of the business class section, ensuring a more comfortable and serene environment throughout the flight.
