Thailand welcomed over 35 million international tourists in 2024, exceeding the government’s target as the country works to rejuvenate its sluggish economy, officials reported on Monday (Jan 6).
The tourism sector, a crucial contributor to the nation’s GDP at nearly 20%, has faced challenges in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and shifting traveler preferences. The 35 million visitors in 2024 were only about four million short of the pre-pandemic peak in 2019, according to the Ministry of Sports and Tourism.
China has regained its status as the top source of visitors to Thailand, following a downturn post-pandemic, with more than 6 million arrivals last year, followed by travelers from Malaysia and India.
Renowned for its stunning beaches and historic temples, Thailand generated over 1.6 trillion baht (approximately US$46 billion) from tourist spending in 2024, as noted by Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong.
The Thai government, under former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, implemented several initiatives to attract foreign tourists, including a complimentary visa program for visitors from China and India.
Having surpassed its 2024 goal of 35 million tourists, the government has now set a target of 39 million visitors for 2025.
The World Bank projects that the country will exceed its pre-pandemic tourism levels in 2025, although it is noted that tourists are spending less compared to previous years.
