Air India (AI) has announced a new order for 100 Airbus aircraft, which includes 10 A350 widebody models and 90 single-aisle A320 Family jets. Additionally, the Indian flag carrier has chosen Airbus’ Flight Hour Services-Component (FHS-C) to support its expanding A350 fleet.
This latest order, already recorded in Airbus’ 2024 orderbook, follows Air India’s previous purchase in 2023 of 40 A350s and 210 A320 Family aircraft. As a result, AI’s total Airbus orderbook now stands at 344, with six A350-900s already delivered.
Air India commenced operations with the A350 in January 2024, marking the aircraft’s entry into the Indian market. On September 1, 2024, AI’s first A350-900 began its debut on the Delhi (DEL)-London Heathrow (LHR) route. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, stated, “With India’s passenger growth exceeding global rates, improving infrastructure, and a youthful population increasingly seeking international travel, there is a clear need for Air India to expand its fleet beyond the 470 aircraft we ordered last year.”
He further remarked, “These additional 100 Airbus aircraft will help position Air India for significant growth and support our goal of transforming the airline into a world-class carrier, connecting India to destinations across the globe.”
Guillaume Faury, the CEO of Airbus, commented on the situation, expressing his satisfaction at Air India’s continuing partnership with Airbus, noting the remarkable growth of the Indian aviation sector in recent months.
