Garuda Indonesia cancels A330-800 orders

Garuda Indonesia (GA, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) has officially cancelled its order for four A330-800Ns with Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac), which was originally signed in December 2022.

In its second quarter results presentation, the airline indicated that while the four widebody aircraft were scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2030, it decided to exercise its cancellation rights as outlined in an Airbus restructuring document.

Garuda initially signed a Letter of Intent for the aircraft in 2019. However, in a recent interview, the airline revealed that it had shifted its focus from the A330-800 to the A330-900N, of which it currently operates three and has an additional nine on order.

Additionally, Garuda confirmed that it had negotiated with Airbus in December 2022 for conversion rights of the A330-900Ns to A350-900s or A350Fs. The remaining deliveries of the Airbus A330-900Ns are expected to occur between 2026 and 2031, although the airline will “conduct a periodic review” based on market conditions.

Currently, Garuda’s widebody fleet includes five A330-200s (with four inactive), sixteen A330-300s (eight of which are inactive), three A330-900Ns, and eight B777-300ERs. According to fleet ownership records, the airline has leased five A330-200s, eleven A330-300s, five A330-900s, and all eight B777s from 12 different lessors, with Avolon, ORIX Aviation, ICBC Financial Leasing, and CDB Aviation each leasing four or more aircraft.

The airline has not yet commented on reports suggesting it is exploring leasing options following the cancellation of the A330-800 order.
