Facial Recognition to Replace Boarding Passes at Six Airports in Thailand

An automated biometric identification system utilizing facial recognition technology will be introduced at six airports in Thailand later this year, allowing passengers to present their physical ID just once.

The system will be operational for domestic travelers starting November 1 and for international travelers on December 1, as announced by Kirati Kitmanawat, director of the Airport Authority of Thailand.

To utilize this system, passengers must consent to the use of their identification information when checking in at the counter or through self-service kiosks at the airports.

The system will electronically gather passengers’ biometric data and travel itineraries, enabling them to move from baggage drop-off to the boarding gate without needing to show their passports or boarding passes. Each registration will be applicable for a single journey.

The six airports participating in this initiative are Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Don Mueang International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Mae Fah Luang/Chiang Rai International Airport, Phuket International Airport, and Hat Yai International Airport.

Kirati noted that passenger traffic at these airports has increased nearly 20% in September and October compared to the same period last year, and growth is expected to continue into next year.
