A 1,496-rai plot of land near Songkhla Lake in Phatthalung has been chosen as the location for a new airport in this southern province.
Supporters believe it will serve as a new hub for tourism and transportation for three provinces: Phatthalung, Songkhla, and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
The land, situated in tambon Khuan Maphrao in Muang district, is owned by the Department of Rice (DoR). The final site selection was made by a public-private working group in Phatthalung during a meeting on August 19, as confirmed by Kittiphit Klapkhun, chairman of the Phatthalung Chamber of Commerce.
The meeting, chaired by provincial governor Nisakon Wisitsora-at, included senior officials from various state organizations as well as representatives from several airlines, including AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air. This decision was followed by initial negotiations with the DoR held on September 5, according to Mr. Kittiphit.
In conjunction with the plan to construct a bridge over Songkhla Lake, the new airport project in Phatthalung aims to enhance travel for both local residents and tourists traveling to and from Phatthalung and its neighboring districts in Songkhla and Nakhon Si Thammarat, which include Cha-uat, Chulabhorn, Hua Sai, and Chian Yai in Nakhon Si Thammarat, as well as Ranot, Krasae Sin, and Sathing Phra in Songkhla.
Bidding for the bridge project is expected to take place next year, with construction anticipated to last approximately 10 years and potentially starting in 2026.
Regarding the Phatthalung airport project, a feasibility study conducted from September 19, 2020, to June 13, 2021, indicated that the investment is worthwhile, showing an economic internal rate of return (EIRR) of 14.70%. The results suggest that the airport could cater to around 214,129 passengers annually, with about 28 flights operating each week.
In addition to its investment potential, the Phatthalung airport project, which is estimated to cost 2.14 billion baht, offers the opportunity to delight travelers with its stunning natural scenery.
The site is located approximately 10 kilometers from Phatthalung’s city center, with the access road to the proposed airport running alongside the lake, as noted by Mr. Kittiphit.
